About DD Hammocks

DD have been at the forefront of hammock camping since 2005. Our exciting range of gear is the result of extensive knowledge, development, prototyping and testing, as well as some great feedback and suggestions made by many people along the way.

Our passion for innovating our gear has allowed us to bring you a hammock/bivi hybrid, a high-spec fully modular hammock, a hammock-specific sleeping bag, and the lightest hammock in the world – to name a few!

DD is based in Edinburgh in the UK and our products have a worldwide reach – not just among hammock campers like you and us, but also across some of the leading bushcraft schools, jungle training organisations, and TV survival shows. Our gear is suitable for use in hot, cold, windy, wet and extreme environments all over the world.

Our small friendly team offers a friendly and prompt service, answering all emails and shipping all order orders as quickly and thoroughly as we can.

We hope you enjoy exploring our product range and website – any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.

All the best,

Nick and the team at DD

The Founder

DD Hammocks was founded by Nick Vansittart, who has travelled extensively around the world - including one overland journey from Lombok in Indonesia back to Edinburgh in Scotland via S.E Asia, China, Mongolia, Russia and then through Europe (a total distance of over 26,000km and taking some 8 months).

Whilst both travelling the world and camping closer to home in Scotland, Nick discovered a hammock - at a fraction of the weight and pack size of a tent - to be an ideal solution for lightweight travelling, hiking and camping, as well as being more comfy than a tent.

Having tried and tested many different hammocks, all with their own advantages, he wanted to find one that combined basic camping features such as wind and insect protection while remaining lightweight, compact, comfy and affordable. There wasnt a hammock like this on the market and so Nick created his own - the Camping Hammock - and DD Hammocks evolved from there!

Since then Nick's desire to build a quality range of products has continued, as have his adventures which include:

Driving from Scotland to Mongolia in an old Skoda, sleeping in hammocks for the month it took to get there. The car had a customized roof-rack to support a hammock on either side;

A washout and nearly disastrous expedition (at one stage running very low on food and one of the group using his hammock mosquito net to catch fish!) through the mountainous, overgrown Cardamom jungle in Cambodia during monsoon season;

A 4x4 trip in an old Land Rover Defender through parts of the Sahara desert and back again to the UK.

Exploring jungle in Sierra Leone and deserted coastline in Liberia.

Nick hopes users of DD products around the world might be inspired to take on similar expeditions!
